Early Years Foundation Stage
We think it is important that our youngest children are encouraged to learn in an environment that enables them to make choices and to assume responsibility for their learning by following their
interests and enthusiasms.
The Early Years Statutory Framework is utilised to support an integrated approach to the learning, development and care of the children. In our Early Years Foundation Stage the three prime areas of learning are:
- communication and language
- physical development
- personal, social and emotional development
We place great emphasis on these three areas as it is important that we ignite our children’s curiosity, encourage their enthusiasms and build their capacity to learn, to form relationships and to thrive.
These three prime areas are strengthened and applied through the four specific areas of:
- understanding the world
- expressive arts and design
Our Early Years Foundation Stage children are taught with a group of Year 1 children in Class 1. The classroom enables both adult directed and child- led learning to take place, indoors and outdoors. Resources are easily accessible and children are encouraged to develop their autonomy.
Planning includes the delivery of a themed approach to learning through topics, selected by both teacher and children.

Trips to the local environment and further afield take place to provide the children with purposeful contexts to augment the children’s learning experiences. Trips have included visiting the installation on Cornwall College’s campus of the children’s author, Oliver Jeffers; visiting the National Maritime museum; local trips to the beach, woods and park; enjoying the pantomime at the Hall For Cornwall.
The children in Class 1 follow a daily routine which allows the teacher to plan learning opportunities that best meet the needs of the children and that focus on the basic skills of reading, writing and number work. Routines include children self- registering, selecting books to read at home as well as Monster Challenges which are planned to progress the children’s skills and understanding.
Phonics-the teaching of letter sounds to read and to write-is taught daily. Children are explicitly taught the skills of blending (putting the letter sounds together to read words) and of segmenting (separating letter sounds to spell).
Short, teacher input is delivered at the start of each session and follow up adult- led or child- led learning takes place. Learning takes place both indoors and outdoors.
Parents as Partners
We value parents as partners and emphasise the importance of home and school working together. Parents are kept up to date with their child’s progress by being invited to access their child’s Learning Journey which details a child’s learning across the Early Years curriculum.
